We’re very pleased to finally announce our partnership with Writivism, the Uganda-based organisers of East Africa’s leading literary festival! We’ve had our eyes on these guys for a while, they are doing exceptional work with an array of authors across the Continent so a collaboration of some kind was just a matter of time!
The opportunity came with their annual short story prize, an award which has #AfricanLit Twitter buzzing every year. We were selected to be a part of the 2016 reading team, an opportunity which gave us first hand experience of the high standard of stories they attract each year. Given the sheer magnitude of submissions they receive, we expected that some brilliant pieces could potentially fall just outside their longlist.
We were right.
After working our way through hundreds of submissions, we finally selected 12 phenomenal stories that we will be showcasing over the next couple of weeks and months. We’re sure that this will be the first of many partnerships with Writivism and the Centre for African Cultural Excellence and we look forward to future collaborations.
But for now, we’re getting the ball rolling with this masterpiece by a South African law student – take some time out and enjoy Diaspora by Suvania-Thrishnum Subroyen.
